Attics and additions
A finished attic or a room over the garage is the hardest room in an old house to heat and cool. A ceiling cassette or a wall head reaches it without a duct run.
Signs this is your house
A bedroom under the roof that is cold in January and hot in August
A room over the garage that never matches the rest of the house
An addition built after the heating was installed
Knee walls and open rafters that leak heat
A radiator that never reached the top floor

What happens at the visit
- 01
Look at the roof
We check the insulation in the rafters and the knee walls. A room that leaks heat needs insulation first and a heat pump second.
- 02
Choose the head
A ceiling cassette between rafters, a wall head on the gable or a floor unit, depending on the room.
- 03
Trace the line set
We find a chase, a closet or an exterior run to get from the room to the outdoor unit.
- 04
Write it down
The proposal lists the head, the line-set route, the electrical work and the insulation note.
What decides the cost
No numbers here, on purpose. The proposal states the total, with each of these lines written out.
Roof and wall insulation
A tight room needs a smaller unit. We write down what we saw and what we sized from.
The head type
Cassettes, wall heads and floor units carry different costs and fit different rooms.
The line-set path
A chase or a closet is simple. A run on the outside of the house adds a line for the cover.
The outdoor unit
A multi-zone unit shared with the rest of the house costs differently from a unit for one room.
Electrical
The circuit and the panel work depend on what the panel has.
Access
A steep stair or a tight hatch makes a longer day for the crew.
Questions on this job
Can a heat pump heat an attic room?
Yes, if the roof is insulated. We check the insulation first and tell you if it needs work before a unit goes in.
Does the indoor unit need a drain?
Yes. A condensate drain runs from each head. We plan its path to a basement sink, a tub or the outside.
Will it be loud in the bedroom?
Indoor units are quiet for their size. We set each one on the wall furthest from the bed where we can.

Send a photo of the room and one of the roof line from outside. We will tell you what we would check on the walkthrough.
