Questions about ductless in an older house

What is a ductless heat pump?

An outdoor unit and one or more indoor heads linked by refrigerant lines. It heats and cools without a duct system.

How long does a heat pump last?

It depends on the model, the install and the care it gets. We write the warranty terms into your proposal and do not promise a life span.

Will it heat in a cold snap?

Modern heat pumps are made to heat in cold weather. We size the system from your house's heating load, and tell you whether to keep your old heat as a backup.

Does it work in a power outage?

No. A heat pump needs power. A gas furnace or a wood stove also needs power for its fans or controls, so check your own backup.

How loud is it?

Indoor heads are quiet for their size. The outdoor unit makes a hum. We choose its place so the sound does not reach a bedroom window.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. We file the permit and book the inspection, and both are lines in your proposal.

How often does it need service?

The filters need cleaning a few times a year. The coils, the drain and the outdoor unit need a yearly check.

Can I put a head in every room?

You can, but most older houses do not need it. We help you pick the rooms where a head earns its place.

What if the panel is full?

We tell you on the walkthrough. A full panel may need a new breaker slot or more, and it is written in the proposal.

My house was built before 1978. Is that a problem?

Painted surfaces in a house that old may contain lead. Where our work disturbs paint, the crew follows the EPA's lead-safe work practices, and we tell you on the walkthrough what that means for the rooms involved.

What does a walkthrough cover?

The rooms, the walls, the windows, the panel, the line-set routes and the outdoor unit's place.
